Shelter Cove Weather
This is a picture Taken this last year during one of our snow storms. This is actually Paradise Ridge, above the Cove, taken by Carrie Hebard. Most people think that Shelter Cove is located right on the Coast so we don't get any snow..... Well, here is the proof that we do. The mountains around us actually are around 1,000 to 2,000 feet elevation so when a front comes through that is a little cool we get snow. This snow lasted about 3-4 days and there were a lot of people who ended up leaving their cars and trucks on the mountain. Call ahead for road and weather conditions........ It is a long walk to the Cove from Paradise Ridge!! LOL
Cody Bruckenstein, U.S. ARMY
Joined the US ARMY 12-10. Currently in Afganistan.....Cody grew up right around the corner from me in Garberville and is a friend of the family!! He Graduated from South Fork High. You are my Hero! Good Luck in your Marriage! She is beautiful!
This is My Son, Pvt. Bonham, Michael...U.S. Army

Our Friend and Local Hero Marine Ian R. Flores
This is another of our local Heros and his Proud Dad, Fred Flores! I have had the pleasure of knowing Ian and his Family for about 4 years. They lived just down the street from me, in Fortuna and they are a great family. Salt of the Earth!! Ian joined the Marines right out of High School, has completed his Basic Training and is now in Afganistan ensuring the safety of the USA and the people there-in. Ian is Tall, Red and All American stuff and a full Red Blooded Marine!!!
He is now and forever, OUR HERO!!!!! Love ya man!! God Keep you safe while you serve this great country!
Sunrise in Shelter Cove!
Sunrise can be just as beautiful as the sunsets. IF, you're up early and real quiet...... you can sneak up on the sunrise and catch it just as it comes over the coastal range. I love the mornings here in the Cove almost as much at mid-day, dusk, and nights!! Kind of a all-round place to live!
My Cousin Sgt Jeff in Afganistan
My Cousin, Jeff, who is currently serving his country in Afghanistan. Jeff, You and those who serve with you are my personal heros. I pray you all come home safe and sound to a country that is better because you served. At least that is my dream! God bless you all!!
Jeff writes, "I Would like to take a moment to share his undying devotion to a group of outstanding Americans. Those who served this nation with dignity and respect. And most important of all, those who are no longer with us, who gave all, so we, as Americans, can have the freedoms we so proudly have today. To all Veteran's today. I salute you!"
To ALL My Heros
My Heros are those young men and women who serve this great land in every corner of the world! They are the ones giving their all for our Freedom! My Heros are those men and women who honor God! Those men and women who are dedicated to honoring their vows of marriage and service to their relationships. This country has lost its soul in its "throw away" society. Why stay with someone for 50 years or a lifetime when there is something to be offered by dishonorable Men and Women everywhere. What is Love anyway? Is it the act of throwing in the Towel for some "Dream" you might have? Or is it in the act of honoring your partner and working through any problem you might have in your marriage? Falling victim to "Lust" and "desire" has brought dishonor to all of society. To all men and women who have a relationship with their God!! I believe in marriage and honor! I find that the relationship that God binds together is worth saving!! It is too easy to throw it all away! Trying to Walk with Christ in all I do......
IN LOVING MEMORY OF MY FATHER.........
Vern Bonham Jr. June 26th 1938 to November 5th 2007 My Father and The greatest man I have ever known!!
Dad was called home to our Lord Jesus November 5th 2007. Surrounded by his family Dad made the final trek onto the trail of mystery we are all destined to travel. Those that knew him will forever remember his quick wit, smile and his piercing hazel eyes. Foremost, My Father loved his family. He loved a good dog, tilling the ground with his tractor and walking in the woods on ground, "steeper than a goat's face". He loved to cut wood and the smell of the forest after it, "Rained so hard it sounded like a cat on a hot tin roof'. His skill with a guitar and old songs, like the "Big Speckled Bird" and "Johnny went down in a bucket" are all now great memories. My Dad was a Great Man, Husband, Father and Grandfather. He touched many lives during the course of his life and he leaves behind a legacy of leadership and service with many public and community organizations. He was a man of the old school. A handshake and his word were his bond. He was honest to a fault and worked hard to provide guidance to his family and his community. He will be forever missed and will surely not be forgotten. God just don't make em like my Dad anymore!! PLEASE, if you have a story or dad made an impression on you please leave your thoughts online for all to see! vernon-bonham.memory-of.com
PRAISE GOD AND BE THANKFUL FOR THE GIFT CHRIST GAVE TO ALL MEN!
I have been a very lucky man. I have loved with the depth of the oceans and as high as the heavens above. I am in search of the peace and joy, that The love of the Lord Christ, promises me. He has reaffirmed himself to me in random acts of his touch. Through complete strangers. People who I didn't know and in new friends. God bless each one of you! I have not learned to look beyond the pain but am trying to embrace it with the love that Christ would want me to and I am still heavy in the heart & soul. I pray for forgiveness not only for me but for her. I pray for the family that I had. My pain and suffering is in the Lord Jesus' hands. Jesus has affirmed that HE IS with me and all of us. We only have to ask him and he is there. Praise God!
God be with you all today and may you walk with him always and thank you for your thoughts and prayers.
"... for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee." Hebrews 13:5b KJV
"Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee... And the LORD, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed. "Deuteronomy 31:6, 8 KJV
"For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus." Philippians 1:6 KJV
"... and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Matthew 28:20b KJV
"The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;... " Isaiah 61:1 KJV (Speaking of Jesus)
"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised," Luke 4:18 KJV (Jesus speaking of Himself in quoting Isaiah 61:1)
"The LORD is near to the brokenhearted, And saves those who are crushed in spirit." Psalm 34:18 KJV
"He heals the brokenhearted, And binds up their wounds." Psalm 147:3 KJV
"Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. " Isaiah 26:3 KJV
"Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance, and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. " Hebrews 12:1-2 KJV
"Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:6-7 KJV
"Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, shall guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, let your mind dwell on these things. The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things; and the God of peace shall be with you... I can do all things through Him who strengthens me... And my God shall supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus. " Philippians 4:6-9, 13, 19 NASB
Even if no one else on earth understands what we are going through... Jesus, Who is God ("... if you've seen Me, Phillip you've seen the Father... I and the Father are one..."), understands and he will bring us through because His love for us is greater than all other loves.
Always remember that God loves you and has a plan for your life, even when the storm around the boat seems impossible to survive... Jesus reached out His hand and rescued Peter from the dark angry tumultuous waves and then with a word He calmed the storm!!!! HE is coming!!!!!
All God's richest blessings to all the children in Christ!
We do get Snow!
We do get snow on the tops of the mountains coming into the Cove! This road into the Cove can be treacherous. Be sure to watch the weather if you are coming to the Cove! Cold nights and north storms bring the potential for snow and ice. The road is hazardous when it is Dry!! Add some snow and ice to the equation and even this small amount of snow on these steep roads almost always leads to "slip, sliddin away. Call me first or get online with CalTrans.com Be careful! God Bless you all!

The lighthouse as you see it today
The Cape Mendocino Lighthouse, in its new Shelter Cove Home, all cleaned up and looking like it did when it was first commissioned at Punta Gorda in the Lost Coast!
Sunset over the top of the Lighthouse
As fall decends onto this community the sunsets become more and more spectacular. Cloud formations add to the palate God blesses us with each night. There are very few exactly the same in the Cove. This was taken October 4th at about 6pm while I did my time on my mountain bike.
Mario and the Lighthouse
"Pop" Machi, Mario and his Brothers, Babe and Tony, were instrumental in the development of Shelter Cove and its fishing history. One of the things I remember as a kid is "Pop Machi" rowing to the Bell buoy and back to the Beach in a small green wooden boat! He would come back with a full limit of Salmon almost everytime! Did you catch the word, Row! Mario Machi was my teacher and school bus driver in high school and it wasn't until I came back from college that I found out that Mario was in the Philipines and survived the march of Batan. It humbled me to know that the man driving my school bus was a real American Hero. The Machi Family will always be considered the founding family of Shelter Cove.

Amy finds her BIG AB
This is a super story! Matt and Amy Micheli own a home here in the Cove and Amy has really taken to diving for Abalone with Matt. They came out hunting for a 10 inch ab so they went cruising around on their jet ski looking for spots on a beauty "blue bird" dive day. Matt pulls up to likely spot and tells Amy, "Dive on down there and see if there are any big abs". This is the one she came up with. Matt almost fell off the jetski!! Way to go Amy!! 10 1/2" keeper!
Matt did hook-up for a 9 inch ab and conceeded to "diver defeat" to his lovely bride?? I'll bet this picture will live on the wall until Matt can find one bigger or Amy will find it for him!!! Uh-Oh the competition begins!!!
Shelter Cove Abalone
These abs were taken by Vern, right in the Cove. If you like abalone, you'll love diving in the waters around the Cove! On a bluebird day, when the sky is blue and there is no surge you can see the abalone from the surface. IF, you look hard there are 10 inchers down there! Just look at Amy's picture above this one!!
IF, you look real harder and get real lucky you might find one over 12 inches. They ARE still around! HIDING!!

Ed Freeman, Hero Vietnam, Rest in Peace
Ed Freeman, Hero to many................
You're an 19 year old kid. You're critically wounded, and dying in the jungle in the Ia Drang Valley , 11-14-1965, LZ X-ray, Vietnam . Your infantry unit is outnumbered 8 - 1, and the enemy fire is so intense, from 100 or 200 yards away, that your own Infantry Commander has ordered the MediVac helicopters to stop coming in. You're lying there, listening to the enemy machine guns, and you know you're not getting out. Your family is 1/2 way around the world, 12,000 miles away, and you'll never see them again. As the world starts to fade in and out, you know this is the day.
Then, over the machine gun noise, you faintly hear that sound of a helicopter, and you look up to see an un-armed Huey, but it doesn't seem real, because no Medi-Vac markings are on it.
Ed Freeman is coming for you. He's not Medi-Vac, so it's not his job, but he's flying his Huey down into the machine gun fire, after the Medi-Vacs were ordered not to come. He's coming anyway. And he drops it in, and sits there in the machine gun fire, as they load 2 or 3 of you on board. Then he flies you up and out through the gunfire, to the Doctors and Nurses. And, he kept coming back.... 13 more times..... And took about 30 of you and your buddies out, who would never have gotten out.
Medal of Honor Recipient, Ed Freeman, died last Wednesday at the age of 80, in Boise, ID ......May God rest his soul..... I bet you didn't hear about this hero's Passing, but we sure were told a whole Bunch about some Hip-Hop Coward Beating the crap out of his "girlfriend"!
